Meristem Definition:Â Meristems
are actively dividing immature cells that form new cells by cell division.
Based on the position meristem are classified into Apical
Meristem, Intercalary Meristem, and Lateral Meristem
Apical meristem occurs at the growing apical points of the plant.
Example:Â The
growing tips of the root and the stem.
Intercalary meristems occur
between to permanent tissues.
Example:Â at
the base of the monocot leaves
Lateral meristems occur
in thin layers along the sides of the stem and the root.
Example:Â Cambium
which increases the thickness of the stem and the root.
