STD or Sexually transmitted diseases are infections that are passed primarily from person to person during sexual activity. These diseases are also called venereal diseases (vd). There are about 30 different STD recognized including aids. They are caused by bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Clinical symptoms provide initial indication of these diseases.
Sexually transmitted diseases  (STD)
1. Syphilis: It is a sexually transmitted disease affecting the urinogenital tract, oral cavity and many other parts of the body. There are very cases of congenital syphilis which occurs when a baby’s mother has the disease during pregnancy.
Pathogen: Treponema pallidum
2. Gonorrhoea : It is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. It can affect both men and women.
Pathogen: Neissera gonorrhoea
3. Chlamydia
Pathogen: Chlamydia trachomatis
4. Trichomoniasis
Pathogen: Trichomonas vaginalis
5. Genital Herpes
Pathogen: Herpes simplex virus
5. Chancroid
Pathogen: Haemophilus ducrei
6. Genital warts
Pathogen: Human papilloma virus
Confirmatory tests for STDs include culture, microscopic examination, antibody detection by ELISA, PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and DNA hybridization.
